Kosuke Okahara

Emergency medical workers take care of Kaori. She took 270 pills at once in order to rid herself of anxiety.

As a child, Miri, 26, suffered frequent beatings and when she reached graduate school, she plunged into a deep depression. Since that time, she has cut herself repeatedly. The cutting, she says, helps her block out the feelings of uselessness that overwhelm her. Like the other subjects in this story, she agreed to be photographed because she felt it would help her understand herself and her bouts with depression better.

Sayuri's arms bear the marks of her self-mutilation. She says that she feels useless because she can't work, which only fuels her depression more.
